The game saves fine, but on the larger levels, the save does not retain the map that you can access with Wizard View, so it's bit like starting the level from scratch. When you load a save and access the map view it only shows the area immediately adjacent to you.

Probably helps CFOU if you attach save file and steps to reproduce.
Does native install have same behavior?

My main saves were the B and D files. I have tried running the original game to make a comparison, but it does not like the new saves, so I have restarted and looked at the first 2 levels which seem to be mapping properly, but having said that, I don't think I noticed a problem on the WHDLoad version until the later levels anyway.....

I have just uploaded BlackCryptRS which are some more saves, but this time from a non-WHDLoad version of the game. These saves appear to retain the map without any problem.

Doomer from EAB adds some useful information. Apparently this problem has been here for a while, see link at bottom of description:

 Ok checked Black Crypt form original ipf images, original installer and WHD. Original works normal, used all slots, overwrite many times etc.
Routine is: Create party -> Chose save slot(A-F) - create CHARACTERS(A-F) and OrigDungeon(A-F) - create TempDungeons -> load TempDungeons to memory -> start game.
Save: actual dungeon from memory to TempDungeons -> Chose save slot(A-F) - update CHARACTERS(A-F) and OrigDungeon(A-F).
Load: load CHARACTERS(A-F) and OrigDungeon(A-F) -> update TempDungeons -> loadd TempDungeons to memory.

Saving and saving, WHD stops updating OrigDungeon and TempDungeons on saving and loading, only CHARACTERS files is updated (checked file modification time) but not always. When you play one hour and save, sometimes only CHARACTERS is saved with party position, inventory etc but not dungeon. Load and have party when save but dungeon from hour ago, not only automap but with locked doors, items on floor, monsters etc. from hour ago. Normal HD install updates all files all time.
