This install applies to "Bard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown" © 1986 Interplay.
Requirements:
-------------
This install requires WHDLoad and RawDIC to be in the path.
These programs can be found in the WHDLoad package.
To install from a different drive than DF0: select installation mode Expert.
The installed game requires 0.5 MB ChipMem
(+1.0 MB for preload and Kickstart ROM).
It can be quit by pressing F10 (key can be changed with Tooltype "QuitKey=").
The game requires an installed A500 Kickstart 1.3 image.
The kickstart image must be located in the directory "Devs:Kickstarts" and
must be named "kick34005.A500". The image can be extracted from a A500 with
tools like 'GrabKick' or similar which can be found on aminet.
If the image is of wrong version or altered in any way WHDLoad will quit with
an appropriate message.
Additionally the file "kick34005.A500.RTB" must be installed in the same
directory as the kickstart image. It can be found in the archive
"util/boot/skick346.lha" on aminet.
Features:
---------
- Full load from HD
- RawDIC imager is used to save files from main disk
- protection removed (Electronic Arts encryption)
- 2 versions supported
- DMA wait in replayer fixed
- Manual and Solution included
- NewIcon (created by me)
- Source code included as usual
- Quit option that works on 68000 machines (default key is 'F10')
And another patch I have redone completely, there were a lot of bug reports
for the old patch so I had a look, the old patch only supported a cracked
version which explains why a lot of people had problems with it.
It also required 1MB chip memory and more than 1MB Fast memory for a reason
I fail to understand!
The protection used for this game is the Electronic Arts encryption which
was very good back in its day! Back in June last year I coded a generic
decrypter (i.e. my routine handles all variants of the protection
automatically) for it just for fun which took me 2 days to do. The decryption
keys are located on the protection track which means the game won't run if
the protection track is missing. The encryption handles binary and executable
files which I find quite interesting considered when it was developed!
Someone clearly spent a lot of effort to make it "not too easy" to break.
The install uses "UnADF" by Andrew Bell (included in the package) to extract
the files from the disk image because some of the files don't have the required
protection bits set and hence can't be copied on OS2.0+ machines.
If you already have created a character disk you can install it too using
the install package, after the game has been installed you will be asked if
you want to install the character disk.
Enjoy this classic game from HD (patches for Bard's Tale 2&3 will follow soon)
and have a happy new year everyone!
Update, 06-Dec-2015
-------------------
I have finally coded a RawDIC imager which is now used to save all files from
the game disk as I didn't like the UnADF solution very much. This means that
UnADF could be removed from the archive and now only "standard" WHDLoad tools
are used in the install process.
Update, 29-Dec-2022
-------------------
I have updated the patch and fixed the sound problems that occured on
fast machines, thanks to aardvark82 for reporting and testing.
The slave has version 1.2, the whole package is version 1.3, please do
not report that the slave version is not 1.3. :)
Update, 01-Jan-2023
-------------------
The imager has been updated, in previous versions it didn't save all
files. Package version is now 1.4, slave version is 1.3 and imager
version is 1.1. The manual has now also been included.
Happy New Year everyone.
